Background: The International Smetana Piano Competition has a tradition of about 40 years. Its aim is to promote the piano works of Bedřich Smetena, who is considered to be the founder of modern Czech music. However, his still underestimated piano creation is left under the shadow of his operas and symphonic or chamber works. The competition bearing Smetena’s name wishes to promote a permanent interest in his piano compositions and make them more commonly heard in the Czech Republic and abroad.
