Concours Luxembourgeois pour Jeunes Solistes and European Competition for Young Soloists

A report by Paul Scholer (Intendant UGDA) The 26th edition of the Concours Luxembourgeois pour Jeunes Solistes, with European Competition for Young Soloists for piano, flute and chamber music for brass instruments, took place on Sunday, November 15th, 2009 at the Luxembourg Music Conservatory. The competitions were organized by the Luxembourg music federation “Union Grand-Duc Adolphe” (UGDA) in close collaboration with the Luxembourg Music Conservatory with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry for Family and Integration and the SACEM Luxembourg which supports musical creation in Luxembourg. The age limit in the solo category was 26 years. In chamber music, the average age was 26, whereas the individual age could not exceed 30 years.

In total, 123 participants (from 139 registered) whereof 120 soloists and 3 ensembles, coming from conservatories, music schools, and music courses from Luxemburg and abroad, have participated in different disciplines. European competition: oboe (8), bassoon (4), French horn (4). National Competition: piano (5), flute (8), clarinet (5), saxophone (26), trumpet (29), bugle (11), cornet (3), trombone (7), euphonium (1), violin (5), violoncello (4) and 3 chamber music groups (1 duet, 2 quintets / 12 participants).

The results of the competition are a testimony to the high level quality of the performances. The jury awarded 130 medals to soloists and group members, whereof 34 gold medals (between 56 and 60 pts), 70 silver medals (between 50 et 55,9 pts) and 26 in brass (between 45 and 49, 9 pts). 13 SACEM Luxemburg prizes were offered to the first laureates of the competition.

Thanks to the society for authors rights SACEM Luxembourg which supports musical creation in Luxembourg, the UGDA could commission three compulsory works for the competition, i.e. works by the composers Luc Grethen, Luc Rollinger et Roland Wiltgen.

FINAL CONCERT AND ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE RESULTS

The final concert took place at 6 pm at the auditorium of the Luxembourg Music Conservatory in front of a large audience. Four young talents, prize-winners of Luxembourg and international competitions delighted an enthusiastic public: Silvija Scerbaviciute (Lithuania), flute; Triin Ruubel (Estonia), violin; Alla Tolkacheva (Russia), mandolin; and Florian Gautier-Chevreux (Luxembourg/France), French horn.

In his welcome speech, UGDA-president Louis Karmeyer thanked all the institutions, the Ministries of Culture and Youth, the sponsors and protectors of the competition, and more particularly the Luxembourg Music Conservatory, which make possible the large promotion of young talents from Luxembourg and beyond the borders.

The UGDA-president also paid tribute to the many young soloists who participated this year in the competition coming from Luxembourg and from abroad, with a total of 12 different nationalities. Special thanks were addressed to the conservatories and schools, and more particularly to the teachers and lecturers who have accepted the challenge to present their students to the competition. The precious collaboration of the accompanying pianists was also emphasized.

The results were announced by the Secretary General of the UGDA Martine Deprez, with a splendid view of the scene where the young soloists received their diplomas, medals and awards from the Federal President Louis Karmeyer, the director of SACEM Luxembourg Bob Krieps and the Treasurer General of the UGDA Aloyse Massard.

European concerts for young talents

In the context of the 26th competition, the UGDA also organized two European concerts with four young soloists, winners of various national and international competitions, on Friday, November 13th, 2009, in Luxembourg-City and in Niederanven : Silvija Scerbaviciute (LT), flute, laureate of the European Competition of the UGDA in 2008 where she also won the "EMCY Prize"; Florian Gauthier-Chevreux (FR/DE), horn, laureate of the Luxembourg Competition in 2008; Triin Ruubel (EE), violin, laureate of the International Competition for Violin Kloster Schöntal in 2005 and 2007; and Alla Tolkacheva (RU), mandolin, first laureate of the international competition "Yasuo Kuwahara" in Schweinfurt (DE) and of the Luxembourg Contest in 2003.

The next Luxembourg competition will take place on November 14th, 2010, at the Luxembourg Music Conservatory, with the European competition for marimba and strings.
