Fermín Villanueva was born in Pamplona in 1993 and began playing cello at the Pablo Sarasate Conservatory of Navarra when he was seven years old. At the age of 18 he graduated from the Higher School of Music of the Basque Country ‘Musikene’ and in 2014 he earned an honorary master degree at the University of Music “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy”, where he studied with Peter Bruns.

He was awarded first prize with an unanimous decision of the jury at the 81st “Concurso Permanente de Juventudes Musicales de España 2014”, EMCY Prize by the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth, as well as prizes at the National Competition for Young Musicians Joaquin Maya (Pamplona, 2005), the International Dotzauer Competition (Dresden, 2009), the “Clara Schumann” Duo Competition (Leipzig, 2014) and the International ‘Young Virtuosos’ Competition (Sofia, 2015). From 2012 he was a member of the ‘Live Music Now e.V.’ Yehudi Menuhin Society and from 2013 he was selected by the Peter-Degner-Stiftung.

As a soloist he has played with orchestras such as the Basque National Symphony Orchestra, the International Camerata of Madrid, the Robert-Schumann-Sinfonieorchester, the Wetzlar Sinfonieorchester, the UA Symphony Orchester, the Leipziger Sinfonieorchester, RTVE Symphony Orchestra, among others.

Fermín has performed recitals at venues including the main Theatre of Vitoria, the Miramón Auditorium of San Sebastián, Palacio Euskalduna, the BBK Hall in Bilbao, the Ateneum of Madrid, the Baluarte Auditorium of Pamplona, the main Theater of Monóvar, the ADDA Auditorium of Alicante, the Palau de la Música Catalana, the Teatro Monumental de Madrid and at prestigious festivals such as Musika-Música in Bilbao (2011), International Pablo Casals Festival in Prades (2011), ‘Quincena Musical’ in San Sebastián (2012), the Leipziger Notenspur (2013, 2014), the BachFest in Leipzig (2013), the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland (2013), the Born am Darß Musikfestival (2014, 2015), ‘Serenates’ in Valencia (2015), Vilabertran Schubertiade (2015) and the Russisches-Kammermusikfest in Hamburg (2015).

His performances have been broadcasted live by RNE, TVE, Catalunya Música, ClassicFM Bulgaria, EITB, InfoTVLeipzig and MDR.

His upcoming projects include concerts at renowned festivals and auditoriums in Europe and Asia, and the recording of his debut CD released by label Columna Música.
